Which Australian MP Does ChatGPT Consider ‘Controversial?’

Australian right-leaning politicians appear to fare poorly when put to the test under the AI-powered ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.

The emergence of ChatGPT, a widely accessible AI-powered tool that can engage the public in all sorts of conversations, has spurred questions over the truthfulness and possible left or right-wing bias of chatbots.

Chatbots work by trawling available content online and “training” themselves in how to sequence and compose original sentences, articles, and even poetry in response to prompts from users (humans)—other AI platforms can “create” music and art.

While programmers are working to walk the middle line when it comes to contentious issues or figures, chatbots do appear to struggle when cornered with specific questions.

Opposition Leader ‘Controversial?’

In testing conducted by The Epoch Times, OpenAI’s ChatGPT is asked “who” Australia’s Liberal Party Opposition Leader Peter Dutton is, the response is neutral.

“Peter Dutton is often described as a conservative politician known for his strong stance on immigration and border security. He has been involved in policies such as Operation Sovereign Borders, which aimed to deter asylum seekers from reaching Australia by boat. This policy has faced both criticism and support,” the chatbot replied on May 29.

“It’s important to note that political figures can have a diverse range of qualities and opinions, and public perception may vary,” it added, then suggesting the user review the latest news sources and public statements.

However, when the question is tweaked to “Is Peter Dutton controversial?” the response changes markedly.

“Yes, Peter Dutton is a controversial figure in Australian politics … Dutton has been involved in several contentious issues and policies, which have attracted both criticism and support,” the chatbot wrote.

“Some of the controversies associated with Peter Dutton include his role in immigration policies, particularly his involvement in Operation Sovereign Borders, which aimed to deter asylum seekers from reaching Australia by boat. This policy has faced criticism from human rights organisations and refugee advocates.

“Dutton has also faced criticism for his comments on various issues, including climate change, same-sex marriage, and race. His statements have sparked controversy and led to debates and public discourse.”

ChatGPT then says the public opinion of politicians can shift over time and that the user read news sources to get the latest on “Dutton and his current controversies.”

Left-Leaning MPs Faring Better on ‘Controversial’ Question

When the exact same question is asked of current Australian Labor Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the chatbot states that its last knowledge update was in September 2021.

“While he has been involved in political debates and faced criticism from opposing parties, Albanese’s level of controversy may vary depending on personal perspectives and political affiliations,” ChatGPT wrote.

“It is worth noting that political figures can experience shifts in their public perception and controversies can emerge or subside over time,” it continues, again suggesting users review current news sources.

A similar response is provided when the chatbot is asked about Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

Yet days earlier, on May 26, ChatGPT provided a glowing review of the foreign minister (suggesting the AI algorithm is adapting day by day) with no mention of a knowledge cut-off date.

“While she may be a subject of differing opinions, she is generally regarded as a respected and influential figure rather than being considered highly controversial,” it wrote.

“Wong is known for her strong advocacy for progressive policies, social justice, and human rights. She has been vocal about issues such as marriage equality, LGBTQ+ rights, climate change, and multiculturalism.”

When asked about Australian Greens leader Adam Bandt, ChatGPT again mentioned its knowledge cut-off of 2021 and told users to review news sources.

The AI program said whether Bandt was controversial depended on “individuals and political affiliations.”

“His advocacy on issues such as climate change, renewable energy, and inequality has resonated with many individuals who share those concerns,” it wrote.

“However, Bandt’s stances and policies may also generate controversy and opposition from those who hold differing views, particularly regarding economic and environmental priorities.”

Contrast this response with that of Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor, which included the following two paragraphs (and no mention of his current role in the shadow ministry):

“Some controversies associated with Angus Taylor include allegations of misconduct and conflicts of interest, particularly relating to his involvement in the water buyback scheme and his family’s farming interests. These allegations have generated debate and criticism,” it wrote.

“Additionally, Taylor’s stance on climate change and energy policies has been a subject of contention. His advocacy for coal-fired power and scepticism toward renewable energy targets has drawn both support and criticism.”

What Does Google’s Bard Say?

Meanwhile, Google’s Bard, released officially in response to ChatGPT’s launch, said all five political leaders—Dutton, Taylor, Albanese, Wong, and Bandt—were controversial with the chatbot providing relatively well-rounded responses (with the Liberal Party’s Dutton and Taylor faring slightly worse).

However, once the question was tweaked to ask what each MP was like, the responses changed markedly, with the left side of politics receiving strong praise.

For the Opposition Leader Dutton, Bard wrote that he is a “controversial figure in Australian politics” and has been “described as being tough, hard-nosed, and uncompromising.”

“He is a talented politician who has achieved a great deal in his career. However, he has also made some mistakes that have damaged his reputation. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to overcome these challenges and become a successful prime minister.”

In contrast, Prime Minister Albanese was praised for his “sense of humour” and ability to “connect with people from all walks of life.”

“Albanese is known for his working-class background and his commitment to social justice. He is a popular figure among many Australians and is seen as a more compassionate and empathetic leader than his predecessor, Scott Morrison.”

His colleague, Wong, was lauded for her “intelligence, her eloquence, and her commitment to social justice,” with the chatbot stating it was sourcing its information from Wikipedia.

“Wong is a role model for many Australians, and she is seen as a potential future leader of the country. She is a strong advocate for social justice, and she is committed to making Australia a better place for all,” wrote Bard.

The same level of praise was meted out to Greens leader Bandt with the chatbot calling him “charismatic and articulate.”

“Overall, Adam Bandt is a complex and interesting figure. He is a talented politician who has achieved a great deal in his career. He is also a strong advocate for important causes, and he is seen as a refreshing alternative to the major parties.”
