Seven students have been killed and 16 others injured in a school shooting in the city of Kazan in Russia’s Tatarstan region, the regional governor said.
Rustam Minnikhanov said four male and three female eighth-grade students died and 12 more children and four adults were taken to hospital, in “a great tragedy for the whole country”. Eighth grade children in Russia are 13 and 14 years old.
State media earlier reported that 11 people died, citing local emergency officials.
At least one suspect, a 19-year-old man, was arrested. Early reports in state media said a second alleged shooter had been killed by police, although those reports were not confirmed by Minnikhanov.
Footage posted on social media showed a young man being pinned to the ground outside the school by a police officer. Footage also showed emergency service vehicles parked outside, with people running towards the building.
Authorities said additional security measures had been put into place in all schools in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, about 430 miles east of Moscow.
While school shootings are relatively rare in Russia, there have been several violent attacks on schools in recent years, mostly carried out by students.
One of the last major shootings took place in Russian-annexed Crimea in 2018, when a student at a college killed 20 people before killing himself.
