Good day! Welcome to the post-Golden Globes edition of The Monitor, WIRED’s culture news roundup. Last night’s awards provided a lot of news, but the Globes aren’t the only thing making the rounds. Dive in now to catch up on everything you might’ve missed over the weekend.
Netflix’s The Irishman and Apple TV+’s The Morning Show Lost at the Golden Globes
For anyone paying attention, 2019 was the year the streaming wars went into overdrive, as Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu ramped up their production slates and new players like Apple TV+ and Disney+ entered the fray. But after several years of streamers becoming awards-season contenders, last night, at the Golden Globes, they seemed to lose their footing. Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, which received three nominations, didn’t take home any trophies, while Netflix’s Martin Scorsese flick The Irishman, which had five noms, also got shut out. Netflix’s series Unbelievable also didn’t win in any category for which it was nominated and Marriage Story, although given six nominations, only received one win, for Laura Dern for best supporting actress. Meanwhile, Amazon’s Fleabag won two awards and Hulu’s Ramy won one. Check out all of the winners—and losers—here.
Knives Out Sequel in the Works
James Bond might be getting a new franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer-director Rian Johnson is working on a sequel to his amazing whodunit Knives Out with an eye toward centering the film on Daniel Craig’s detective character, Benoit Blanc. Johnson also told THR that he’d like to make the sequel quickly, perhaps even in the next year. The original was made for about $40 million and has since earned some $247 million globally. No word yet on how a new Knives Out movie could impact Johnson’s forthcoming Star Wars trilogy.
Disney Made More Than $13 Billion at the Box Office Last Year
As of right now, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has made more than $918 million, which means it will likely be Disney’s seventh—yes, seventh—movie released in 2019 to make $1 billion or more. Skywalker crossing that threshold also means that, all told, Disney will have made more than $13 billion at the box office in the last year. That’s huge, and—as Deadline points out—a record that is unlikely to be topped anytime soon.
The New Mutants Has a New Trailer
The New Mutants—the X-Men horror flick that seemed lost to the sands of time—is back (mwahaha). It has a new trailer. Watch it below. The New Mutants is now set to hit theaters April 3.
