STUDY: Vaccinated people more likely to be infected with Covid-19 variant

A recent study from Tel Aviv University finds that a South African variant of the virus that causes Covid-19 affects people vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine more than it impacts unvaccinated people. That’s according to the Epoch Times.

The study reportedly looked at 400 people who received at least one shot of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and contracted the Covid-19 variant, and compared them to the same number of people who were infected but unvaccinated.

The study found the vaccinated patients were eight times more likely to be infected with the variant (5.4 percent compared to 0.7 percent) than unvaccinated patients, according to the report.

Based on patterns in the general population, we would have expected just one case of the South African variant, but we saw eight.

Adi Stern, Tel Aviv University

The study concludes, “This means that the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine, though highly protective, probably does not provide the same level of protection against the South African (B.1.351) variant of the coronavirus”.

The study has not yet been peer-reviewed.
