POLL: Growing concerns about energy

Americans’ concerns about the U.S. energy situation have dramatically heightened over the past year. That’s according to Gallup.

More than 7 out of 10 people say they worry about the availability and affordability of energy in the United States, according to the poll.

That’s up from just over one-half of the people who said they were worried about our country’s energy supply last year. Last year, about 54% said they had concerns about our energy supply, representing a record low level of concern for this question, says Gallup.

A majority say they believe that the U.S. will face a critical energy shortage within the next five years.

The increased concern goes hand-in-hand with increasing gas prices, according to Gallup.

Record high levels of concern about U.S. energy (82%-83%) were recorded by Gallup in 2006 and 2008, when gas prices were sharply rising.
