Millions of doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been given in the U.S. Thousands of adverse events have been reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) where patients, family and medical professionals can report any illnesses noticed after vaccination.
Health officials say there is not necessarily a link between the illnesses reported after vaccination and the vaccines.
So far, at least 50 deaths after vaccination have been reported in the U.S. through the VAERS system. Health officials say there is no evidence the deaths are linked to the vaccines. It can be difficult to make a determination since many people given the vaccines are already sick at the time.
The adverse event reports lag behind real time and are not always complete. For example, as of Jan. 17, 2021, the Jan. 4, 2021 death of a 56-year old physician in Florida after the Covid-19 vaccine did not turn up in a search result of VAERS.
Here’s a summary of the deaths reported to VAERS so far, according to a search. The number at the top of each case is the VAERS case number.

A 66-year old ill Colorado man with COPD, heart failure, end stage renal disease (dialysis patient) and other illnesses living at a senior living center received the Moderna vaccine on Dec. 23, 2020. The next day he was sleepy and complained of pain in his legs. Early the following morning, on Dec. 25, he was found dead “eyes half open and foam coming from mouth.”

An 84-year old California man with advanced dementia and aspiration pneumonia living at a senior living facility received the Moderna vaccine on Dec. 23, 2020. Three days later, he became sleepy, got mild hypotension, and wasn’t hungry. He died two days after that.

An 89-year old Iowa woman at a long term care facility received the Moderna vaccine on Dec. 22, 2020 and reported mild fatigue afterwards. She had “previously been in and out of hospice care…[was] elderly with dementia.” She died on December 27.

A 63-year old Illinois man received the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine on Dec. 28, 2020 “coded and expired” the following day. He was taking many drugs, including Lisinopril, Zyprexia, and Flomax.

A 78-year old Nebraska man living at a senior living facility received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine on Dec. 28, 2020. He had “Alzheimer’s Disease, Encephalopathy, Hypertension,Acute Kidney failure, Urine Retention, Recent UTI.” He died on December 30.

An 88-year old Kentucky woman at a senior living facility, who’d had coronavirus more than 14 days earlier, received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine on Dec. 30, 2020 and died about an hour and a half later.
