The feud between Republicans over who should lead the new Republican majority House or Representatives a “Speaker” continues to take a nasty tone.
This evening, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), an opponent of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) becoming Speaker, fired off a letter to the Capitol Architect. It states that McCarthy is improperly “occupying” the Speaker’s office after three successive votes today failed to give him the majority needed for him to become Speaker.
“…it seems Mr. McCarthy can no longer be considered Speaker-Designate following today’s balloting,” reads the letter by Gaetz.
McCarthy is considered an establishment Republican, while some Republicans are pushing for a different leader such as Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who has said he will not run for or take the job.
McCarthy has gotten most of the Republican votes in balloting so far, but not the majority needed to install him in the spot as Speaker. He says he will continue to run and call for votes until he wins enough support.
Whoever is elected Speaker replaces Democrat Nancy Pelosi (R-Calif.) in that post.
