Watchmen Is Finally Being Called a Hit

Good day, and welcome to The Monitor, WIRED’s roundup of the biggest news in pop culture. What’s happening in the world right now? To start, people are showing up in big numbers to watch Watchmen. Also, Taylor Swift is (maybe) going to the Sundance Film Festival, and there’s a new Mulan trailer. Let’s dive in.

Watchmen Is Getting Good Viewership Numbers

Turns out, Watchmen isn’t just popular on social media. After a couple weeks of filling Twitter timelines and conversations by the water cooler, the HBO series is starting to garner some pretty impressive viewership numbers. According to Variety, the show is now averaging 7.1 million viewers per episode via its cable channel and streaming services. That makes the series, according to HBO, the network’s most-watched new show since Big Little Lies and one of premium cable’s most popular new series. Guess everyone now knows how many people are watching Watchmen.

Taylor Swift Is Going to Sundance. Maybe

Earlier this week, the Sundance Film Festival began announcing its lineup for the 2020 fest. Among the movies to be screened: Taylor Swift: Miss Americana, the pop star’s forthcoming Netflix documentary. Will Swift head to Park City, Utah? We’ll find out when Sundance starts on January 23. Definitely coming to Utah: Julie Taymor’s Gloria Steinem biopic The Glorias, Dee Rees’ The Last Thing He Wanted, and Wendy, the new Peter Pan-adjacent film from Beasts of the Southern Wild director Benh Zeitlin.

The New Mulan Trailer Is Here

Last but not least, Disney just released a new trailer for its live-action remake of Mulan. Watch that below.
