Michael J. Fox Pitches Gender-Swapped Reboot Of ‘Back To The Future’

Back To The Future is one off the most beloved movie franchises of all time, so many fans would love to see it brought back and rebooted. While star Michael J. Fox has an idea to make this happen, some fans may feel that his idea is just a little too “woke” for their liking, however.

Fox’s Reboot Idea

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Fox gave his pitch for a Back To The Future reboot, saying that he’d like to see a gender-swapped version of it.

“I actually had this thought that if they did the movie again, they should do it with a girl as Marty,” he said, referring to his character Marty McFly. “There’s something about [the franchise] that connects with people on every level. I just feel like it will come around again.”

Watch Fox talk more about this in the video below.

Hollywood has gone so “woke” in recent years that reboots that swap the genders and races of the main characters are a dime a dozen these days. While we love Fox just as much as anyone does, his Back To The Future pitch is a bitter reminder of just how far Hollywood has fallen in the decades since the original films were made.

Back To The Future 4 Won’t Be Happening, Writer Says

Thankfully, it does not seem like this “woke” gender-bending version of Back To The Future will be happening anytime soon. Back in 2020, Back To The Future writer Bob Gale explained to Collider why a fourth Back To The Future movie simply isn’t in the cards.

“We told a complete story with the trilogy,” he said back in 2020, according to Movie Web. “If we went back and made another one, we’d have Michael J. Fox, who will be sixty next year, and he has Parkinson’s Disease. Do we want to see Marty McFly at age sixty with Parkinson’s Disease? Did we want to see him at age fifty with Parkinson’s Disease? I would say ‘No, you don’t want to see that.’”

“And you don’t want to see Back to the Future without Michael J. Fox,” Gale continued. “People say, ‘Well, do it with somebody else.’ Really? Who are you going to get? All you’re gonna do is beg comparisons to the originals, and you’re not going to match up.”

Fox Talks Popularity Of Back To The Future

Elsewhere in the interview in which he gave his “woke” Back To The Future reboot pitch, Fox gave his thoughts on how popular the original movies remain today.

“What’s most amazing about Back to the Future is that — and it has nothing to do with me — but it has this life,” he said. “People don’t just like it and remember it, they celebrate it and embrace it and get my face tattooed on their leg, and I mean, it’s crazy but in a good way.”

“I love it and I only recently have been able to embrace it in a way,” Fox continued. “Not that I rejected it before, or wasn’t proud of it, but I didn’t fully get how much people related to it, how much it meant to them.”

Back To The Future does indeed mean so much to fans that it would be a shame to ruin it with a “woke” gender-swapped reboot. For this reason, we can only hope that a Back To The Future reboot with a female lead never comes to fruition.
