Claudia Webbe, a former Labour MP who is facing jail time after she was convicted of harassment against suspected love rival Michelle Merritt, has claimed that she is being descriminated against in court for being a black woman.
“I am a black woman in a white court, facing a white system and white prosecutors,” said Webbe in a message to a circle of her supporters. She will be sentenced on Nov. 4 and is facing jail time for the harassment conviction.
According to the Daily Mail, Webbe continued in the message before the verdict:
“I have been deliberately targeted because I am vulnerable. I know first-hand the sexism and racism institutions and media use to vilify black women.”
According to The Times, the defendant has been suspended from the Labour Party, and but vowed to remain in her seat as MP while she appeals the conviction.
She has been convicted of making a series of threatening phone calls between September of 2018 and April of 2020 in which she threatened Merritt, a friend and ex-girlfriend of her current boyfriend, Lester Thomas.
The court convicted Webbe of harassment for actions such as threatening to throw acid on Merritt as well as threatening to send naked photos and videos of her to her family. The presiding judge, upon finding her guilty, warned Webbe that the evidence presented in court passes the threshold for jail time.
