Police say pro-Palestinian Waseem Awawdeh is charged with hate crimes in the beating of a 29-year old Jewish man named Joseph Borgen. Awawdeh, 23, is reportedly a college student.
Awawdeh has reportedly been released from jail while the case against him moves forward. He allegedly told a jail employee, “if I could do it again, I would do it again.”
According to the New York Police Department, Awawdeh, 23, is charged with hate crime assault 2, gang assault 2, menacing, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Awawdeh is allegedly one of five men who are said to have attacked Borgen, unprovoked last Thursday near Times Square.
Borgen is quoted as saying the attack is making him rethink wearing his yarmulke, a Jewish skullcap, in public.
Borgen told the New York Post that he suffered a concussion, injured wrist and body bruises. “I have a black eye. My face is banged up. I’m just sore all over my body. They were kicking me in my ribs, my stomach,” he says.
Shortly after Thursday’s attack, police released the above images of the men believed to have assaulted Borgen.
Numerous hate crimes against Jews and Asians have been reported in New York City.
